Duties
The Legal Assistant serves as an aide to the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT) Resident Legal Advisor (RLA). The Legal Assistant plays a key role in executing program goals by providing advice regarding Nigerien criminal law; researching issues of law and procedure; reviewing and interpreting legislation; establishing and maintaining contacts with host government officials; working with representatives of diplomatic partners, NGOs, and other U.S. agencies; assisting with planning workshops, visits, and conferences; tracking tasks and deadlines, drafting memos, providing translation assistance where needed, working on special projects as needed, and providing administrative support to the RLA and OPDAT programs at post. The Legal Assistant will handle approximately $500 in cash at any time.
Qualifications and Evaluations
Requirements:
EXPERIENCE: At least three years of experience practicing law or working on legal policy with an NGO, a diplomatic partner, law firm, or the Government of Niger.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Applicants should understand how the Nigerien criminal justice system functions, including specialized processes for terrorism cases. The incumbent must have a detailed and broad knowledge of Niger political and legal leaders, and key political, governmental, and law enforcement institutions and hierarchies, as well as knowledge of relevant legislation, current events in politics, and legal reform, specifically in areas such as criminal law.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent (License) in Law is required.
Evaluations:
LANGUAGE: Mandatory: Level IV (fluent) reading, spoken and written English and French. This may be tested.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES Optional: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and poise, a team-oriented and flexible attitude, a strong work ethic, strong writing skills in French and English, and computer competence (including experience using MSWord, Outlook, Microsoft Teams, Planner, and Excel) are required. This may be tested.
