BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
Learning, documentation, and dissemination form a comprehensive process that enables an organization to derive insights and understanding from its collective experiences, ideas, and interpretations. This is achieved by systematically locating, capturing, creating, sharing, applying, and storing knowledge and related materials. Such skills are crucial for refining technical tools, policy guidance, and organizational processes, thereby improving the impact of nutrition and HIV programmes in WFP. Additionally, this plays a vital role in strengthening institutional memory and sustainably improving organizational capacity.
The Nutrition & Food Quality Service (PPGN) has recognized the importance of learning documentation and platforms as essential to executing the Nutrition Strategy effectively. To enhance the adoption and application of new knowledge and information for improved nutrition outcomes, PPGN has focused on four primary areas: gathering and processing information to make it readily available and accessible, generating evidence to support nutrition initiatives, stimulating learning through structured educational activities, and establishing robust internal and external connections for the efficient dissemination and sharing of knowledge.
The Junior Consultant will support the Nutrition Platforms and Data Management Officer in the MERLIN team, to improve the learning infrastructure and data management practices within the Nutrition and Food Quality Service (PPGN ). This role is crucial for supporting the documentation of practices, development of learning materials, and maintenance of digital platforms that facilitate knowledge sharing and staff development. The consultant will assist the MERLIN team in capturing and organizing data and knowledge that uphold transparency and accountability to donors, ensuring that staff are well-equipped with the necessary tools and information to effectively implement nutrition and programmes.
The Junior Nutrition Integration Learning, Documentation and Platforms Consultant will support the efforts of UNICEF and WFP / United States Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) transition plan by ensuring the efficient implementation and maintenance of the knowledge management system and learning. UNICEF and WFP's knowledge management and learning strategy for addressing child wasting focuses on managing a centralized knowledge repository, developing learning briefs, regular training sessions, and detailed guidelines to ensure effective knowledge dissemination. The plan emphasizes collaboration through workshops and seminars, continuous monitoring and evaluation, and adaptive strategies based on real-time feedback. This approach aims to stabilize child wasting prevalence and enhance national capacities by leveraging evidence-based practices and fostering cross-sectoral partnerships.
PPGN expanded the content and use of multiple platforms including; the WeLearn Nutrition Channel, Team Workspace, WFPgo, GoDocs, and the Brown Bag Series and will build on the successes with a focus on utilization of new nutrition knowledge to programmes design, implementation, evaluation leading to improved nutrition outcomes.
This role is focused on enhancing the learning documentation and platform management across WFP, including headquarters, regional bureaus, and country offices, as well as with external stakeholders including the UNICEF-WFP BHA transition plan. The incumbent will assist in optimizing the use and effectiveness of learning platforms within PPGN , working closely with regional and country offices to improve access to and application of educational content and resources.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and Maintain Nutrition and Food Quality Service Learning Platforms: Support the development and regular updating of digital learning platforms to ensure they are user-friendly and contain the most current and relevant nutrition information. Document and Organize Content: Systematically document, categorize, and store materials and resources in folders, repository and different platforms to facilitate easy access and retrieval by staff across the Nutrition and Food Quality Service in HQ and provide support to Regional Bureaux (RB)’s Facilitate Training and Development: Coordinate and facilitate training sessions and workshops that promote skill development and continuous learning among staff and stakeholders. Improve Knowledge Sharing: Establish and maintain effective communication channels to enhance internal and external knowledge sharing, ensuring all relevant parties have access to necessary learning resources. Creation of an interactive online platform for resource sharing and communication between UNICEF-WFP Transition plan Support the production of learning briefs for UNICEF-WFP Transition plan summarizing best practices and lessons learned Manage the Global Nutrition Brown Bag series ensuring that sessions are held regularly (no less than twice per month), with internal and external speakers relevant to global nutrition discussions, WFP operations, and country office programmes. Monitor and Report Usage Metrics: Regularly monitor and analyze platform usage and feedback to assess the effectiveness of learning materials and platforms, making adjustments as needed to improve user engagement and content relevancy. Ensure and promote sharing of knowledge and evidence: Foster collaboration communication across HQ, Regional Bureaus and Country Offices through Community of Practices. Manage the Global Nutrition Mailing List, as well as platform membership informed by this list (i.e. Global Nutrition Teams Space, WFP Nutrition Community, Outlook Global Nutrition mailing list). Support the development of key learning and knowledge products on nutrition programming, in support of the new WFP Nutrition Strategy and dissemination of Nutrition Integration as a cross-cutting priority. Provide support to the various teams within Nutrition and Food Quality Service to research, produce documents and assist organization. Perform other tasks as requested by the supervisor
DELIVERABLES:
Deliver fully functional and user-friendly digital learning platforms with quarterly updates reflecting the latest nutritional information and research, including for UNICEF-WFP Transition plan. Compliance with usability metrics will be monitored through user feedback surveys, aiming for a 90% satisfaction rate.
Establish a comprehensive digital repository by categorizing and storing all educational and operational materials.
Facilitate a minimum of 5 training sessions and workshops per year to enhance staff skills and knowledge.
Develop and maintain communication channels that result in year-over-year increase in user engagement on internal forums and a considerable increase in external knowledge dissemination activities.
Support development of learning briefs for the UNICEF-WFP transition plan
Successfully manage and execute at least 12 Brown Bag sessions per year, with a diverse range of topics relevant to global nutrition trends.
Produce and maintain three key types of documents annually: Case Studies, Best Practices, and Lessons Learned reports, each aimed at documenting and summarizing effective strategies and outcomes
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
University degree in nutrition, nutrition science, community nutrition, or related field or university degree in international affairs or development studies, social science or communication with experience in nutrition.
Advanced degree in relevant field desirable.
Experience:
At least 1 year experience working in an international organization preferably UN (especially nutrition) desirable.
Experience in web-content design and familiarity with managing on-line platforms.
Relevant background on the linkages between policy issues and operations desirable.
Knowledge & Skills:
Strong computer skills with the ability to quickly learn to use new tools as necessary.
Knowledge of nutrition and food security issues in humanitarian and development contexts.
Excellent writing, analytical and research skills.
Advance knowledge of Microsoft office (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Ability to process and develop innovative presentations appropriate for a range of audiences internally and externally.
Self-starter and strong team player.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in multicultural settings that involving multiple stakeholders.
Languages:
Fluency in English required. Working knowledge of another UN language (preferably French) desirable.
