Fruit and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets (FRESH) is an initiative of the One CGIAR that uses an end-to-end approach to address fruit and vegetable demand, food environments and supply issues simultaneously and in a coordinated fashion. The initiative involves research on consumer behavior, food environments, markets, production systems, and genetic diversity and improvement. FRESH is a partnership between the One CGIAR and World Vegetable Center, also involving several other international and local partners. Benin, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Philippines are FRESH target countries during the first 3-year period of the initiative.
WorldVeg is seeking an experienced Research Assistant (RA) – Agricultural Economics to support FRESH. This is a nationally-recruited early/mid-career position that will be based at WorldVeg’s Regional Center for West and Central Africa in Cotonou, Benin and report to the Regional Director.

Key job responsibilities:
• Contribute to scoping literature reviews of policies and interventions promoting the production, trade and consumption of fruit and vegetables
• Conduct research on food environments and social inclusion in food systems (i.e., women, youth, socially disadvantaged groups)
• Organize and lead the implementation of questionnaire surveys among farm household, consumers and other actors in fruit and vegetable value chains
• Contribute to capacity strengthening activities organized by FRESH in Benin such as trainings, workshops and other events
• Contribute to data analysis and publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Perform any other duties as required by the needs of the Center and as directed by the Agricultural Economist or the WorldVeg Regional Director for West and Central Africa

The Person:

Required
• A national of Benin or person with permanent residence status in Benin
• Minimally a BSc degree and preferably an MSc in agricultural economics or environmental economics or a related discipline with a strong focus on applied research
• Strong affinity for the mission of WorldVeg and goals of FRESH
• Strong communication skills in spoken and written French and English

Desired experience
• At least two years postgraduate work experience in conducting household surveys, data management and analysis
• Familiarity with the fruit and vegetable sector in West Africa
• Experience in conducting scoping literature reviews
• Good experience in data analysis with STATA
• Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Excellent organizational skills
• Skilled in using Microsoft Office tools

The Reward:
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff position with competitive pay and benefits. The initial appointment is for 12 months, renewable conditional on the availability of project funding and priorities set by the project. The position is available as of 1 September 2022.
