Fonctions et responsabilités
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Ecosystem Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The Nairobi Convention Secretariat for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Western Indian Ocean region, is within the Ecosystems Division of UNEP. This position is home-based and is located within the Nairobi Convention secretariat.

BACKGROUND OF THE CONSULTANCY
The third phase of the programme on capacity building related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries (ACP MEAs 3 Programme) seeks to empower key stakeholders to address environmental challenges and to reap the benefits of improved environmental management at the national and regional level. In the context of the Nairobi Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Western Indian Ocean region (Nairobi Convention), Phase III of the ACP MEAs Programme aims at better management of coasts and oceans, enhancing ocean governance and effective implementation of the Convention. The programme has been supporting the strengthening of the governance framework of the Nairobi Convention and its associated protocols, including supporting conservation of migratory species, the development of a regionally representative network of marine protected areas, and in enhancing measures for reducing the influx of waste entering the marine environment.

With support from the ACP-MEAs III Programme, the Secretariat for the Nairobi Convention is undertaking an editorial review and printing of the partnership publication on ‘Chondrichthyans of the Western Indian Ocean: Biodiversity, Fisheries and Trade, Management and Conservation’. The status report on the conservation and management needs of Chondrichthyans (sharks, rays and their relatives) was spearheaded by the Wildlife Conservation Society following the seventh Conference of the Parties to the Nairobi Convention (COP7). The publication supports the Contracting Parties to the Convention and partners in their efforts towards sustainably managing, protecting, and developing the marine resources of the Western Indian Ocean region. The report reveals the main threats facing chondrichthyans in the Nairobi Convention area, biodiversity, fisheries, trade and policy for each of the ten Nairobi Convention Member States. For an improved chondrichthyan management the report recommends actions that should be considered by the Member States. In its preparation, the report involved a team of experts working with several organizations committed to the conservation of sharks and rays and the conservation and sustainable development of the Western Indian Ocean Region. The authors and editors have drawn on the expertise and input of a wide range of contributors – scientists, fisheries experts, policy experts, resource managers, technicians, and conservationists.

For this purpose, the Nairobi Convention Secretariat is seeking the services of an experienced and qualified science editor to edit the partnership publication on ‘Chondrichthyans of the Western Indian Ocean: Biodiversity, Fisheries and Trade, Management and Conservation’.

The science editor (hereinafter referred to as “Consultant”) will be required to work according to detailed Terms of Reference contained in the following sections.

• Review, edit to a high standard and proofread the manuscript, foreword, preface, and summary, to ensure accuracy, correct language use, consistency, clarity, and conformity with UNEP style guidelines.
• revise or rewrite text, as needed, to allow for improved readability and logical sequence.
• Propose revisions to the document’s layout to enhance flow and user-friendliness, and incorporate these as agreed.
• Ensure compliance with UNEP editorial style guidelines, and proper acknowledgement of the Nairobi Convention, authors, and all partners and projects involved in the publication.
• Accommodate or update any input, suggestions, or additional changes that may proposed by partners.
• Produce Pdf files for electronic/online distribution
• Produce print-ready pdf files for printing.
