Organizational Setting
FAO Gambia and partners are implementing the Climate Fishery Initiative for Livelihood Improvement in the Gambia (PROREFISH Gambia) project. The Project aims to address increased resilience and enhanced livelihoods, health, well being, food and water security of the most vulnerable people, communities and regions. Expected results include resilience of ecosystems, ecosystem services, infrastructure and the built environment to climate change threats as well as reduced emissions from land use, reforestation, reduced deforestation through sustainable forest management and conservation of forest stocks.The project will scale up adaptation measures that have been proven in a number of countries in West Africa, and in similar contexts, with a particular focus on climate-proofing fisheries infrastructure and on value chain segments dominated by women (fish handling and processing). The project will promote the adoption of aquaculture technologies and support the strengthening of the enabling environment for Gambian fisheries and promote a stronger engagement of the private sector.

Reporting Lines
Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in The Gambia, the AFAOR-Programmes, the National Project Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Lead Technical Officer (LTO), the Environment & Social Sustainability and Gender specialist will support the learning and knowledge management processes of the project on environment and social sustainability as well as on gender mainstreaming in the project. The specialist will ensure adherence to the recommendations of the project’s Environment and Social Management Framework and to national policies on environment and social sustainability as well as adherence to FAO’s and national Government’s gender policies and strategies.

Tasks and responsibilities
• Carrying out diagnostic assessments to identify key environment and social sustainability and gender issues.
• Appraise the environmental risks and impacts associated with project activities against the project’s Environmental and Social Management Framework.
• Draw on principles of generating co-benefits for climate change mitigation, gender and social inclusion while safeguarding against any adverse effects of the project activities, using evidence-base and hypothetical scenario building, as needed; drawing on good practices in The Gambia and globally.
• Raise awareness on environment and social sustainability and on gender mainstreaming among implementing partners and stakeholders.
• Define steps required to ensure compliance with the Environment and Social Management Framework.
• Recommend capability-building needs for implementing partners, beneficiaries and stakeholders on pertinent issues in environment and social sustainability, gender, and compliance requirements.
• Broker relationships with key ministries such as within the Ministry Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources; Department of Forestry, Department of Parks & Wildlife; Ministry of Gender and Social Welfare; Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources & National Assembly Matters; Ministry of Agriculture; Civil Society Organisations, NGOs, beneficiaries in pursuance of the project deliverables.
• Contribute towards Corporate knowledge base by analyzing and disseminating lessons learned and best practices in environment and social sustainability and gender mainstreaming.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• University degree in Environmental studies, Economics, Development studies, Social Sciences and related areas.
• A minimum of five years of relevant experience.
• Working knowledge of English Language
• National of Gambia.

• A track record of leadership in research, analysis, and operations focusing on environment and gender.
• Strong operational experience in human development areas.
• Experience in monitoring and evaluation with experience in the design and implementation of programs addressing environment matter or gender-specific sources of vulnerability.
• Experience supporting capacity building and knowledge and evidence uptake.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and teamwork.
• Excellent oral communication and writing skills.
