Sudan is surrounded by the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya and South Sudan. Positioned next to East, West, and North Africa, it is surrounded by complex conflicts in an unpredictable, volatile and rapidly evolving region. Sudan is by size the third biggest country in Africa, with a diverse population of around 42 million people. Sudan’s children make up half of the total population, and the past two decades have seen their lives significantly improve: fewer girls and boys are dying before their fifth birthday, primary school attendance is increasing, immunization coverage is high, and the country remains polio free. Still, millions of children continue to suffer from protracted conflict in Darfur, the Kordofans, and Blue Nile, from seasonal natural disasters, malnutrition and disease outbreaks, and from under-investment in basic social services. More than three million of Sudan’s school aged children are not in the classroom. UNICEF has been in Sudan since 1952 and continues with a presence in 12 of Sudan’s 18 states.

How can you make a difference?

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:
Supports the development of the UNICEF Sudan Peacebuilding and Social Cohesion programme portfolio including development of the SCO strategy.
Support to mainstreaming/positioning PB and social cohesion in Country Programme Documents process, in collaboration with PB Adviser, other sections and PME team.
Supports the implementation of capacity building activities, most notably on peace building and conflict sensitivity with UNICEF staff and partners to mitigate conflict drivers and to strengthen social-cohesion and conflict sensitive programming.
Supports the development and implementation of the PB programmes at the National and undertake field levels programme support mission.
In collaboration with the Peace Building Adviser supports fostering effective working relations with the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) and UNITAMS mission by assisting in the development of joint policies and programmes.
Guides and supports sectoral teams, Field Offices, the humanitarian team as well as Planning Monitoring and Evaluation in the design, implementation, monitoring and reporting on peacebuilding initiatives. This includes specific support to the Peacebuilding Fund programme (PBF) initiative and the Strengthening Resilience and Social Cohesion in Darfur program.
Liaises with UNICEF’s regional and HQ team to identify and support best practice examples of strengthening social cohesion across the sectors of education, health, WASH, child protection, adolescent participation, early childhood development, C4D and nutrition.
Provides technical guidance to the Field Operations and Emergency section in developing a comprehensive multi-hazard risk informed programming analyses by mapping the causal relationship between conflict, climate change, natural hazards and man-made exigencies and by creating UNICEF appropriate and related risk mitigation strategies.
Promotes PB programming, Produces analytical, background, and program concept notes and proposals for UNICEF.
Provides inputs to inter-agency integrated strategy documents and response plans geared towards creating social cohesion and promoting peace in Sudan
Identifies and researches best practice and lessons learned across the UNICEF Sudan peacebuilding work and shares these with colleagues, including through active participation of the Peacebuilding Sudan Forum.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) is required, in international relations, social sciences, peacebuilding, development or related area.
A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted, in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years or more of progressively responsible experience in the humanitarian and development sector in the UN, INGOs or international organizations.
Field or related area experience at the international level is required in peacebuilding, disaster risk reduction, peacebuilding or the triple nexus (humanitarian, development and peace).
Experience in collaboration and designing interventions with Member States, UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes or comparable international organization.
Fluency in English as well as knowledge of Arabic is an asset.
